Welcome back to the Retro Ramblings for another dose of curated links to the some of the best retro and nostalgia-themed content from around the web!
It’s been a long hot week here in my neck of the woods, but these hot summer days bring their own form of nostalgia with them. I think back to those long, hot, summer days when I was a kid and all of the fun adventures that came with them while being out of school.
Back then, I would go inside and watch television for an hour or two to cool off for a while before heading back out into the heat to play until the sun went down. There is no play time now. That was replaced by outdoor work years ago for geezers like me. Mowing, trimming, washing the house, tending the garden, repainting everything on the property, and too many other chores to continue listing here.
But even though play was replaced by work, I still take a break during the day to cool off a little, but I don’t turn on the tube. Nowadays I open the laptop and write during those breaks in the work day. I like to think of it as multi-tasking. I get to take a break from the heat, and as a result, you get some fun new articles to enjoy (hopefully).
So let me start this week’s edition out with some of those new articles and where you can go read them.
At Retro Ramblings on the web I posted an essay telling the tale of The Time I Broke My Thumb Playing Titty Twister At Bible School. I’m sure a lot of you visited Bible School during the summers of your youth, but I highly doubt any of you had an experience like the one I detail.
I also posted another Wax Pack Flashback video. In this one, I open an old pack of Comics Future Stars art cards from 1993.
Meanwhile, over at The Retro Network, I penned an article about one of the most shocking events in all of professional wrestling history. In the article I reflect on when Hulk Hogan pulled off the most shocking heel turn in wrestling history to form the nWo at Bash at the Beach ’96.
In case you missed it when it dropped earlier this week here in the Retro Ramblings newsletter, I relay the story of How Jurassic Park Helped Create McDonald’s Super Size.
And over at Retro-Daze, I share my memories of my summer tradition of viewing Garfield in Paradise every year.
Hopefully you’ll check it all out and share your thoughts via comments along the way.
I had a busy week with new content, but I wasn’t the only one. Let me share some other cool stuff with you that I came across this week while surfing the web. I think you’ll like these…
This Nostalgic Life #54 – The Campy Movies of My ’80s Youth (This Nostalgic Life)
McDonald’s Halloween Bucket Release Date Confirmed For October 2025! (Nightmare Nostalgia)
The Last Summer I Saw My High School Friends (The Retro Network)
This Month in Yester Year History – July (Yester Year Retro)
Trench Coat & Nightmare Fuel (Nostalgia Nation)
Old Forts and Old Vans (Ninjas and Neon)
The Real Reason Generation X is the Forgotten Generation (GenXcellent)
The History of Zinka (Retroist)
I also want to take an opportunity to point out something to you from Here Lies. They have put together a VHS experience taking you back to the summer of 1993. It’s six hours of video featuring clips of shows, movies, commercials, and a little home video footage that will make you feel like you’re laying in your bed watching late night television in the summer of 1993.
As an added attraction, when you order, you get a real, honest-to-God VHS copy of the presentation. You also get a digital code to make it easy to watch for those of you without a VCR. But having the VHS copy of it makes a great display pieces and conversation starter for your home.
It’s definitely worth checking out. If it’s something you’re interested in, just click on the image above or this link to go to their site for purchasing options.
And one last thing before I get out of here. I want to let everyone know that over at The Retro Network, we have launched a new Discord server. At the Network, we are always talking retro and nostalgia from the 70s through the 90s. Comic books, toys, music, video games, movies, television, cartoons, and more. We strive to be stress free, with no politics, as we want to focus on the things that bring us together, not divide us. So it’s always a fun atmosphere and we’re always on the lookout for more retro folks to come hang with us.
So if you like the things I talk about here, and/or are a fan of The Retro Network and want to join in all the fun we're having there, drop me a line at mickeyleeyarber@gmail.com and I'll send you an invite to join us on Discord.
That’s going to do it for this week. If you know of a fun link you think I would like, drop it in the comments below so I can check it out. Otherwise, we’ll do this again next week.
